Destinations - South America - Peru - Best Time to Go
Peru’s seasons are either wet or dry. Travelers usually prefer to visit during the drier months of May through October, but most make the trek in July and August when Europeans and North Americans are on summer vacation and Peruvians celebrate their national holiday (July 28th). May and September are also great times to go as travelers can enjoy the warm, sunny weather amidst fewer crowds. Airlines and hotels consider these months, as well as the period from mid-December through mid-January, peak season.

When you book your trip really depends on what you want to do once you get there. From June to September (winter in the Southern Hemisphere) in the highlands, days are clear and often spectacularly sunny. You’ll find cooler or chilly nights, especially at high elevations—which makes it a great time for trekking in the mountains or on the Inca Trail. This is also the best time of the year to visit the Amazon basin: Mosquitoes are fewer, and many fauna stay close to the rivers. Some adventure-seekers, however, prefer to travel in the jungle during the wet season, when higher water levels allow for more river penetration. Either way, your nature lovers’ appetite will be satiated no matter when you go.
